Battle Born, Battle Worn

A visit to the Mob Museum landed Megg Mueller in hot water.

My note last issue was titled “Looking For Solid Ground.” As I sit here in my dining room, working from home and wondering how our current situation will resolve, I find myself once again looking for something solid to stand on. For the record, it’s April 2.

Our offices were closed on March 15, for two weeks we thought, as our state grappled with the news of the coronavirus. Just eight days later, we were told our offices would not be open until April 13. Alas, we send the issue to press on April 8, which means the staff of the magazine will not have seen each other for the final month of production. Word came today that we are under a stay-at-home order until at least April 30.

To say that this is a challenge would be an understatement, but I think I can speak for the staff when I say we all understand how lucky we are. We are still able to work, and we still get to create a magazine we all love.

As of this writing, it would be unwise to promote travel, so you’ll notice some changes to our content. Our Events & Shows section of the magazine has been changed up a bit, as it was almost impossible to share with you the events that normally would be the hallmark of a Nevada spring. We are still sharing news about businesses that came to us before the shutdown happened, but as we all know, things can change very quickly these days. The news we share is true as of today; please confirm it for yourself before you visit someone we’ve written about.

While today is not the day for promoting travel, it’s my hope that by the time you get this issue, we will be in a calmer, more recognizable place. And it’s my firm belief that it’s never unwise to promote dreaming about travel. This is what we can offer you, and what we’ve always offered. Nevada and its wide-open spaces and exciting cities will be here when it’s time to get back to the business of travel. And we can’t wait to see you.

HIGHLIGHTS IN THIS ISSUE

It’s a good time for some laughs, so head straight to page 46 and read about Nevada author Michael Branch. He lives with his family in the wilds of Nevada, and his books are hilarious and informative about life in rural world.

If you like mysteries, you’ll find a whopper in this issue’s Nevada Twilight story on page 38. And it’s no mystery why The Mob Museum is one of the state’s greatest treasures; read about it on page 62.

We took a trip to the wild northwestern portion of the state, in search of canyons, pioneers, and solitude. Associate Editor Eric Cachinero writes about High Rock Canyon, Fly Canyon, and so much more on page 70. This is one story destined to feed the soul.

Enjoy!
