The 2011 Snowshoe Season with the Tahoe Rim Trail Association is well underway – but there are still plenty of opportunities left to get out and enjoy the crisp and clean air with us. Join the Tahoe Rim Trail Association for FREE guided snowshoe treks every Saturday through the end of March. These snowshoe hikes are great for all abilities (shorter hikes are appropriate for kids). Discover this fun and easy way to exercise and socialize during the winter months in the Tahoe Basin.

You must register in advance for these snowshoe treks. Online registration is now required for all TRTA programs and can be completed on the TRTA website at www.tahoerimtrail.org. For more information call 775-298-0012 or email Tom at programs@tahoerimtrail.org.

Saturday, February 12th – Free Guided Hike to Page Meadows – Enjoy an easy 3-4 mile guided hike through the meandering trails of Page Meadows. Pass through groves of aspen, the bark of which was used historically by Basque sheepherders as sketch pads. The hike begins at 10am at the top of Silver Tip Drive outside of Tahoe City.

Saturday, February 12th – “Snow Detectives” Winter Animal Tracking Family Hike – Join the TRTA staff in the Tahoe Meadows to discover the techniques and fun of winter animal tracking. Uncover the hidden world of winter animal survival by following their scat, signs and tracks. The hike begins at 10am near the TRT interpretive loop in the north Tahoe Meadows.

Wednesday, February 12th – TRTA Sweetheart Sunset Hike – With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, treat your significant other to a memorable snowshoe stroll with the TRTA. Enjoy a romantic and picturesque view of Lake Tahoe as the sun sets behind its west shore’s mountains. The hike begins at 4pm near the south end of the Tahoe Meadows.

Saturday, February 19th – Free Guided Hike to Castle Rock – The TRTA continues its snowshoeing season with an easy, four mile trek to Castle Rock. Located near the Southern end of the lake, this hike is perfect for South Shore residents. The hike begins at 10am at the Kingsbury Grade North trailhead off of North Benjamin Drive.

Saturday, February 26th – Free Guided Hike to Tahoe Meadows – Join the TRTA and USFS for an easy 3-4 mile hike from the Tahoe Meadows to the crest of Lake Tahoe Basin ridge. Treat yourself to a breathtaking view of the lake and enjoy a morning of exercise in the winter air. The hike begins at the south end of the Tahoe Meadows at 10am.

Saturday, March 5th – Free Guided Hike to Martis Peak – Kick up your snowshoeing expeditions a notch! Join the TRTA for a moderate, eight mile trek to Martis Peak, located above King’s Beach on the North Shore. Once there, enjoy beautiful panoramic views of the “Jewel of the Sierra” – Lake Tahoe! This hike is not for beginners, and gains 1,650’in elevation in four miles. The hike begins at 9:30am at Martis Peak road off of Hwy 267.

Saturday, March 5th – Free Guided Hike to Tahoe Meadows – Beginning at the Tahoe Meadows, TRTA trained guides will lead you through a copse of Jeffery and Lodgepole Pine to the basin ridge. From there, hikers will be treated to a gorgeous view of the snow covered Sierra Nevada and the expanse of Lake Tahoe. This hike begins at 10am in the south Tahoe Meadows near the tree line on the east side of Hwy 431.

Saturday, March 12th – Free Guided Hike to Page Meadows – Allow TRTA guides to lead you through the labyrinthine Page Meadows and enjoy the winter scenery, air and exercise. This pleasant hike is recommended for snowshoe novices as it is only 2-3 miles. This hike begins at 10am at the top of Silver Tip Drive outside of Tahoe City.

Saturday, March 19th – Women’s Spring Equinox Trek to Castle Rock – Join TRTA guides on a ladies only hike to Castle Rock to celebrate the vernal equinox. Come celebrate the coming of spring and make some new friends out on the trail. This hike begins at 10am at the Kingsbury Grade North Trailhead off of North Benjamin Drive

**Full Moon Hikes – TRTA Members Only

Friday, February 18th – Full Moon Snowshoe Trek – Not a member of the TRTA? This is a great opportunity to join! Afterwards, enjoy a moonlit tromp around Slide Mountain at the north end of the Tahoe Meadows. No flashlights are needed on this short snowshoe hike because the full moon shines brightly on the snow, guiding the way.

Saturday, March 19th – Vernal Equinox Full Moon Snowshoe Trek – Not a member of the TRTA? This is a great opportunity to join! Afterwards, enjoy a moonlit tromp around Slide Mountain at the north end of the Tahoe Meadows. Celebrate the coming of spring with your friends. Remember, no flashlights are needed on this short snowshoe hike because the full moon shines brightly on the snow, guiding the way.
