Participants are free to reinvent themselves at Burning Man, a festival of art and community that begins August 27 and runs through Labor Day weekend on Nevada’s Black Rock Desert. On Saturday night, the 40-foot Man is torched. Whether the firing is symbolic or not, it serves as a fitting end to the freewheeling event in which more than 35,000 revelers take part.

The sheer size of Nevada’s Black Rock Desert can take your breath away, and when the summer sun beats down, the vast playa can look bleak and lifeless. But the campers, four-wheelers, hikers, bird watchers, and rock hounds who love it can point you to an oasis or two. RVers bring along their “toys”—ATVs and motorcycles—to zoom over the flat playa and climb into the surrounding mountains.

The strains of acoustic rock and bebop fill the Henderson Events Plaza on Thursday evenings when free music, poetry, and dance performances entertain visitors of all ages. Ten miles south, Boulder City boasts arts events and rejuvenated shops and cafés that are bringing tourists and locals downtown. The two Southern Nevada communities have been reinvigorated, and the arts are flourishing.

Q&A with Bobby Julich
Reno resident Bobby Julich’s Tour de France résumé epitomizes the topsy-turvy nature of professional cycling. In 1998, he stood on the podium after finishing third overall in the world’s most prestigious road race. Last year, a horrific crash robbed Julich of an opportunity to achieve his lifelong goal, to win a stage of “Le Tour” and wear the famed yellow jersey.
From July 7 to 29, the 35-year-old Julich, a Team CSC rider who earned a bronze medal in the 2004 Olympic individual time trial, hopes to compete in what could be his last Tour de France. In the near future he will give up the travel-weary life of a pro cyclist to devote more time to his family, wife Angela and daughters Olivia, four, and Chloe, nine months.
Julich grew up in Colorado and has owned a home in Reno since 1999. In April, while he spent time at his second home in Nice, France, Julich spoke with Nevada Magazine associate editor Matthew B. Brown.
