The new Burton Snowboard Academy at Northstar-at-Tahoe is the first of its kind, not only in the Lake Tahoe area, but the world. This isn’t your typical beginner crash course in which newbies are struggling to carve or make a simple turn. The academy can help with that, of course, but even experts can learn a thing or two at the school, located at the top of the Northstar gondola (mid-mountain).

The terrain course allows experienced boarders to fine-tune their jumping, spinning, and turning skills, while beginners have access to an easy lift and tame riding hill. Participants can even watch video of themselves in the academy’s lounge area for instruction that goes beyond the course.

Manager Joshua Thompson-Bourrie says the emphasis is on an aggressive approach to the mountain, rather than a fearful one. This establishes instant confidence in beginners, and more swagger in veterans. “We guarantee that you’ll be carving and turning at the end of the day, or the return trip is on us,” Thompson-Bourrie says.

As far as equipment goes, the best in Burton technology—boards, bindings, boots, and helmets—is available at the academy. “No need to hit up the rental shop,” according to the academy’s Web site. See below for rates.

Terrain Park Updates

Red Bull’s Rainbow Ledge Box debuted in January and is located on the Pinball ski trail, accessible from the Vista Express chairlift. It will be used in the terrain park during the winter and Northstar’s downhill mountain-bike park in the summer. The feature has a ledge option in the center and offers multiple take-offs.

Capix’s modified gateway, or battleship box, is coming soon, and will be the latest feature to join the Pinball terrain park.

New at The Village

JJ Morgan and Executive Chef Mark Estee, owners of the popular Truckee restaurant Moody’s, recently opened Baxter’s Bistro and Lounge in the Village at Northstar. I had the opportunity to dine there recently and came away impressed. Crab Tower appetizer with avocado? No complaints here.

This fine-dining restaurant can be quaint or lively, whatever you’re in the mood for. For a more upbeat experience, make sure you catch country and jazz nights, featuring live music. The bar serves libations with fresh herbs and fruit and a tempting selection of charcuterie and cheeses.

The Chocolate Bar, already with two locations in Reno, will open soon. It carries a wide variety of milk, white, and dark chocolate, as well as appetizers, desserts, wines, spirits, and signature cocktails. You can also order cheese fondue, seared ahi tuna, herb-marinated flat iron steak, blue lump crab cakes, soups, salads, and more. It will be located across from Baxter’s.
