The Bard Returns to Sand Harbor
As You Like It on stage for the 42nd Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival through August 24.
If all the world’s a stage, then surely Lake Tahoe’s Sand Harbor State Park is one of the best seats in the house, especially this year as Shakespeare’s musical comedy—As You Like It—takes the stage at the Sand Harbor Amphitheater during the Annual Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival.By Jeri Singley
Director Edward Morgan has taken this classic and set it in early 20th century New England, around the time of the second Industrial Revolution.
“We’ve placed Arden in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. The villains are greedy Industrialists,” Morgan explains in his director’s note. “The exiled Duke is a follower of Emerson, a would-be Thoreau. Rosalind and Orlando are the new Americans. Fiercely democratic, they succeed by merit—not privilege—as they forge a new worldview and sense of equality.”
“It’s been fun transplanting this brilliant play to American soil. It’s given the text new resonance for us,” Morgan writes. “We hope it does the same for you, and that our version is as you like it.”Gates open at 5:30 p.m. The show is performed at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday, with tickets starting from $15 for children and $25 for adults. Premium seats and tables are available for an additional fee. Shakespeare’s Kitchen, operated by Brimm’s Catering Company, also opens at 5:30 p.m.—serving a variety of appetizers, salads, entrees, and cocktails. Guests are also welcome to bring their own food and drink to the performance.
