Circus Circus Reno 24-Hour Mural Marathon
Artists submissions for the Circus Circus Reno 24-Hour Mural Marathon, July 10-11, have opened. This is a permanent art installation on the side of the Circus Circus Reno building and an event for spectators and artists alike. The murals (seven in total from seven different artists) will face Virginia Street in the heart of the Arch District in downtown Reno, a busy intersection for motorists, travelers, and events.
2014 was the inaugural year of the 24-Hour Mural Marathon and featured seven different artists. Rex “Killbuck” Norman won first place for his mural “The Strongman.” The selection committee will be accepting submissions to be one of the competitors no later than April 16 by midnight.
The competitors will have 24 hours to paint an original mural in panel 19 feet 7 inches wide by 14 feet high. The artists compete for prize money: $2,000 to the first place winner, $1,000 to the second place winner, and $500 to the third place winner. Each artist will also receive a $750 stipend to pay for paint and materials in order to complete the murals. The competition begins July 10 at 10 a.m. and goes through the night, ending July 11 at 10 a.m.. The winners will be selected by a separate panel of judges to be determined.
Virginia Street will be closed for the event from Fifth to Sixth Street to accommodate the artists. Circus Circus Reno will also have music, food, and art vendors. This event is not just a competition, but a show for audiences of all ages. People are invited to watch the art created right in front of their eyes. Reno is Artown and Circus Circus wanted to connect with the community to not only show the support for the art community, but to also take part in it.
The artist’s submission is open to any and all artists from around the globe. Artists must submit a biography or resume, two examples of previous work created, an artist’s rendering of the proposed mural, and a signed work agreement.
