Lightning, rainbows, and a leaping dog…ranchers, a motorcyclist, and paddle surfers in a fog—this year’s Great Nevada Picture Hunt photo contest had its share of pleasant surprises. The 2010 categories are the same as last year—City Limits, Wide Open, People, Adventure, and Events.

A tour of The Mackay Mansion Museum reveals many nuggets of Virginia City history. Perhaps the most fascinating is learning of a system of underground tunnels that once led from John Mackay’s home to a number of businesses in town. After a four-year hiatus, the museum reopened for tours on May 1.

Adam Bradley
Adam Bradley, 38, is what is called a thru-hiker. A pioneer in the relatively unknown sport of fastpacking (a seemingly masochistic union of backpacking and trail running), he holds the current speed record on the 2,650-mile Pacific Crest Trail at a mere 65 days, nine hours, 58 minutes, and 47 seconds—21 hours faster than the previous record. While substantially shorter in distance than this transcontinental adventure, Bradley recently underwent a Nevada trek of far greater significance.
